Introducing Erik
Erik works for an international news wire service. His beat is international criminal courts. He has been covering the ICC for many years and must track and report on the developments in all its cases. He covers other courts and tribunals in The Hague as well. The ICC is not 100% of his job. He visits the ICC website every day - sometimes many times a day to get the latest updates about the cases at the ICC, for background information and to fact-check his stories.
Goals
To get the latest updates from the ICC including court lings and transcripts To check information for a possible story To see what is coming up in a particular case, eg an important witness will be appearing To watch the trials live and to watch video summaries of the trials
Frustrations
Having to hunt around for information because it is scattered in many different places, eg across the organs or case pages Missing an update because it was published in an obscure place Documents not being uploaded quick enough (need to corroborate or refute rumours promptly)
Introducing Grace
Grace works as a radio reporter based in Nairobi where she has lived for seven years. She creates stories about the ICC for radio, TV and online. She is online everywhere - work and home (PC laptop) and on the move (iPhone). She visits the ICC website every day - sometimes many times a day to do research and get the latest updates about cases in the Kenyan situation.
Goals
To get the latest updates from the cases in the Kenyan situation including court lings and transcripts To nd background information and fact-check the workings of the ICC and its key participants To explore context and precedents for current decisions by making comparisions with other earlier cases To reference the legal documents of the court such as the Rome Statute
Frustrations
Cannot nd case updates easily Cannot nd information to fact-check a story, eg defence council has said something but there is nothing on the ICC website Too many clicks to get to court lings from the Kenya situation Cant access the court lings on her iPhone due to large le sizes Couldnt nd information about the appointment of a new ICC president. She had to call for directions to that information Lack phone numbers and names on the press page
Introducing Andres
Andres has been a professor in international law in Columbia for the last ve years. Previously he has worked at the ICC and the ICTY. He spends up to 10 hours a day online, researching and checking information. For him, home is work with the office being the part of his apartment where he sits with his Mac laptop. He has built up a sophisticated and extensive network to keep him informed about the ICC including colleagues and friends on Twitter and a host of international justice and law blogs.
Goals
To see the latest lings from cases at the ICC To search for and look at lings on a particular subject To watch live streaming video from the courtroom
Frustrations
Difficult to nd important decisions The search function: important information is not shown, unimportant information is shown Lack of search by theme or keyword The opportunity the ICC is missing to explain its work and the difference it is making to peoples lives Timely access to transcripts (Sierra Leonne court shared within a day and ICTY does well despite the workload and redactions)
Knowledge of ICC
Introducing Daniel
Daniel works as the ICC legal officer for an anti-torture charity based in London. He monitors every ling and decision from ICC and disseminates relevant information to a network of charities around the world, particularly in Africa.
Goals
Monitor ICC hearings and produce summaries either in person or via the live stream Monitor decisions and other developments in cases to produce a range of updates including daily emails Find background and other contextual information which is relevant to victims rights Monitor the reports, policies and discussions of the ASP, eg cooperation
Frustrations
Not being able to see the latest updates Not being able to nd lings. Poor search function Slow publishing of lings Overly legalistic language which is difficult to understand Poor explanations of how the court works, its structure and the Rome Statute system which make his job as a proxy more difficult

Frustrations
Having to get ICC news elsewhere - not acceptable for legal developments and decisions from the court . She really wants to be nding those out from ICC website Too much irrelevant information Not being able to nd things, eg running to a meeting and need to nd a reference in a document Having to go to many different parts of the website to check for updates, eg OTP, Public Affairs, etc. Dont make me have to think if it was something issued by the chambers or the prosecutor or the defence.
